Dequervains
De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a condition where the tendons at the base of the thumb become irritated and inflamed, causing pain along the thumb side of the wrist. It affects the tendons responsible for lifting the thumb and is often linked to overuse.
The condition typically develops from repetitive thumb or wrist movements—such as lifting, gripping, texting, or manual work. It can also occur after pregnancy or with hormonal changes, and is common in new parents or people with repetitive hand-based tasks.
- Pain at the base of the thumb or thumb-side of the wrist
- Swelling near the base of the thumb
- Discomfort with gripping lifting or twisting
- Acatching or sticking sensation with thumb movement
If thumb or wrist pain is limiting your daily activity, our team is here to help you get back to doing what you enjoy
Trigger Finger
Trigger finger is a condition where a finger or thumb catches or locks when bent, due to irritation and inflammation of the tendon sheath. It occurs when the tendon can’t glide smoothly through its surrounding tunnel, causing pain and a “clicking” or snapping sensation.
Trigger finger is often caused by repetitive gripping, strain, or inflammation around the finger tendons. It’s more common in people with diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or those performing repetitive hand-based tasks
- Pain or tenderness at the base of the affected finger/thumb
- Clicking or popping sound when bending or straightening the finger
- Stiffness especially in the morning
- Finger locking in a bent position which may suddenly release
If your finger is catching or locking, our team is here to provide expert care and get your hand moving smoothly again. Our team can offer ultrasound imaging and guided corticosteroid injections to help resolve persistent cases and help restore movement and tendon function
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition caused by compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. This can lead to numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand, particularly affecting the thumb, index, and middle fingers.
It often results from repetitive wrist or hand movements, prolonged pressure on the wrist, or swelling within the tunnel. It’s more common in people who type, grip, or use tools regularly, and may also be linked to pregnancy, diabetes, or arthritis
- Numbness or tingling in the thumb index and middle fingers
- Wrist or hand pain especially at night
- Weak grip or difficulty with fine motor tasks
- Feeling of hand clumsiness or dropping objects
Ultrasound guided injections can help reduce inflammtion of the nerves alongside a combination of manual therapy, nerve gliding exercises, splinting, and ergonomic advice to help mamage symptoms.
Wrist/hand/finger OA
Osteoarthritis (OA) in the wrist, hand, or fingers is a degenerative joint condition where cartilage wears down over time, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced function. It commonly affects the base of the thumb (CMC joint), finger joints, and wrist, especially with age or after previous injury.
Wrist and hand OA typically develops due to age-related wear and tear, but it can also be linked to repetitive use, past fractures, joint instability, or underlying conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. It’s common in those who use their hands frequently for work or hobbies
- Joint pain or stiffness especially in the morning or after activity
- Swelling or tenderness at the effected joint
- Reduced grip or difficulty with fine motor tasks
- Bony enlargements or deformity of the fingers/thumb base
Our team can provide tailored treatment to help restore movement, improve strength and manage pain including ultrasound guided injections where appropriate to to reduce inflammationand improve comfort
Hand/Wrist Repetitive Strain injuries ( RSI)
Repetitive strain injuries (RSIs) in the hand and wrist are caused by overuse of muscles, tendons, or nerves due to repetitive movements or sustained awkward positions. RSIs can affect a range of soft tissues and are common in people who perform frequent typing, gripping, lifting, or tool use
RSIs often develop gradually from repetitive tasks, poor ergonomics, or prolonged static postures. Contributing factors include lack of rest, muscle imbalances, and unaddressed strain from work, sport, or daily activities.
- Aching or throbbing pain in the hand or wrist
- Stiffness or tightness especially after activity
- Tingling numbness or sensitivity in the fingers or wrist
Our team can assess movement patterns, work habits, and muscle imbalances to treat the root cause of your RSI. Treatment may include manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation, ergonomic advice, and pacing strategies and ultrasound guided i. Our musculoskeletal consultants can also provide ultrasound guided injections if inflammation is persistent.
