Spondylosis
Cervical spondylosis—also known as cervical osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease (DJD) of the neck—is a common, age-related condition affecting the joints, discs, and bones of the cervical spine. It can lead to stiffness, discomfort, and occasionally nerve irritation.
It develops gradually due to wear and tear of the spinal discs and facet joints. Contributing factors include ageing, poor posture, past neck injuries, and repetitive strain (such as long hours at a desk or looking down at screens).
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Discomfort that may worsen with prolonged sitting/rest
- Reduced neck mobility
- Occasional shoulder/arm pain or headaches
If neck discomfort is affecting your daily activities or sleep we can help reduce pain, restore movement, and improve neck strength and posture
Headaches
Headaches can stem from a variety of causes, but many are related to tension or mechanical issues in the neck and upper spine. At our clinic, we commonly treat tension-type and cervicogenic headaches—headaches that originate from the muscles and joints in the neck.
Headaches are often caused by mechanical issues in the neck, such as joint stiffness, muscle tension, or poor posture—particularly from prolonged sitting or screen use. Previous neck injuries, like whiplash, can also contribute, as well as general stress and fatigue, which increase muscular tension in the shoulders and upper back. These factors can irritate structures in the neck that refer pain into the head, resulting in tension-type or cervicogenic headaches.
- Dull aching pain or pressure in the head
- Pain starting at the base of the skull or neck
- Sometimes pain radiates to the eyes or forehead
- Muscle tenderness or restricted neck motion
Mechanical Neck Pain
Mechanical neck pain refers to discomfort caused by strain or irritation of the muscles, joints, discs, or ligaments in the cervical spine. It’s one of the most common types of neck pain and is typically related to movement, posture, or loading, rather than nerve compression.
Mechanical neck pain often results from poor posture (especially during desk or screen use), muscle imbalance, joint stiffness, or repetitive movements. It can also be triggered by sleeping awkwardly, stress-related muscle tension, or previous neck injuries such as whiplash
- Localised stiffness or pain
- Pain worsened by certain movements
- Muscle tightness or tenderness
Our team can provide a full assessment to identify the root cause of your neck pain. Treatment may include hands-on therapy, targeted exercises, postural correction, and, when needed, ultrasound imaging or guided injections to reduce inflammation and aid recovery
Whiplash
Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden, forceful back-and-forth movement of the head, often occurring during road traffic accidents, falls, or sporting incidents. This motion can strain or irritate the muscles, joints, ligaments, and discs in the neck.
The most common cause of whiplash is a rear-end car collision, but it can also result from any impact that forces the neck to move abruptly. This sudden motion can lead to mechanical dysfunction, inflammation, and soft tissue strain, contributing to pain and reduced movement.
- Neck and pain stiffness
- Headaches often startingat the base of the skull
- Pain with movement
- Shoulder upper back or arm discomfort
We provide tailored rehabilitation, hands-on treatment, and postural advice alongside an MSK consultation to support recovery and manage persistant pain. If you’re struggling with neck pain after an accident or sudden impact, we’re here to help restore comfort and movement safely.
